Susan Deliss has a collection of ewe and kente cloths from West Africa, some silk, some cotton. With geometric patterns, they are masterpieces of weaving and colour. Made on very narrow looms, the strips of cloth were joined into larger textiles that would have been draped round the wearer. Susan particularly enjoyed viewing the collection of these cloths at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Demetra was inspired by these extraordinary and often underrated textiles. Susan was surprised that, because of the weaving process that she uses, her colour choices were much more constrained than in the originals and so she experimented a lot to capture some of the quirky nature of the original colour palettes. She was also determined for Demetra to have a textured surface that gave some sense of the weaves that had so inspired her.
